1. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
COPYRIGHT – EUROPEAN COPYRIGHT DIRECTIVE
The European Directive designed to modernize copyright in the digital age was adopted on March 26, 2019. Among other aspects, it establishes a related right for news publishers and agencies to authorize, for a fee, the use of their publications by information service providers and particularly news aggregators. France has already implemented this provision through the Law of July 24, 2019, which created a related right for a term of two years starting January 1st of the year following first publication. However, news publishers and agencies will not be entitled to object to the use of hyperlinks, or to the reproduction of very short excerpts from their publications.
